After a long and arduous struggle, my guild finally killed Mythic Mistress Sassz’ine – BEFORE the Netherlight Crucible, I’m pleased to say. As is now tradition with the kill videos I make for the guild, I provided and illustration.
I actually drew this AGES ago – not long after the Desolate Host picture. It is my most detailed boss kill picture to date and, because I am still learning so so much about shading, colouring and line work, it did take me something like 18 hours to finish. So, er, not exactly ideal for commissions! But then, with every drawing being a learning experience. I am sure I can come up with something similar to this in a more timely manner in future.
Just for fun, here’s some WIPs of the finished Sassz’ine image.
Here is the “rough line” of Sassz’ine, which I drew over much neater later on. I realise now that this in itself is a huge time-waster – this sort of thing is both too rough to be presentable but also way too detailed to serve as the quick outline it was meant to be. There’s a reason experienced artists draw over geometric shapes, and it’s something I need to get into the habit of. It all comes down the confidence I talked about in the Cheok picture. Doing this kind of faux-detailed rough work is because I don’t have the confidence to transition from basic shapes to proper sketches – but I’m learning.
Here is the neater line work I eventually created – there are actually a few changes between this and the finished article. I don’t know if this is a thing lots of artists encounter of its just my relative lack of experience, but I always find that there are a few little mistakes I only notice when doing the shading/details etc etc
Here she is about half way through the process. I do the colouring before I do the neat linework – if only so I don’t have to stare at a blazing bright screen when doing all the lines zoomed x400% etc.
Seeing the unlined tail, though, my friend said she thought the look of a solid colour/no line drawing would be interesting. And so for her benefit I also came up with this:
Mistress Sassz’ine is now ready to sell you an iPod.
And there you are! My portfolio is nicely plumped up and this one drawing nicely milked. But hey, it took me 18 hours. Of course I was going to show it you 4 times.
Regarding the kill video, here it is!
Check it out. It was a lot of fun to make and, I hope, a lot of fun to watch as well.
Next on the list to draw is Maiden of Vigilance, but I’m going to try something different with her. Instead of a cartoony, comic book style, I will be attempting a style similar to what my next commission is in, to get some practise. I look forward to showing it to you soon!
