My name is Jamie O’Flinn, but on the internet I go by Huffbuh. There’s a story behind that. For a good long while I’ve been writing and learning how to draw because I’m a fancy-pants creative type who enjoys making art in order to silence the demons within
entertain people. Anyway I decided to make this here blog in order to start cataloguing my growth as both a writer and a drawer of things and thought “what better time to start than NaNoWriMo?”
I’ve never done NaNoWriMo before, but I have written three novels, so I at least know I’ve got it in me to finish the damn things. But to start and finish one in a month? That takes a sort of discipline I so far haven’t had, and really want to start building for myself. So how best should I motivate myself to go that extra mile and stick to a deadline? Why, bare my progress online for all to see, of course! That way, if I mess it up, if I let my self-imposed work schedule slide for days, weeks, months, years then the whole sorry affair will be made public and my shame will be highlighted from now and forever until the end of time.
But I don’t want that. So I’m gonna DO it. I’m gonna participate in NaNoWriMo and I’m gonna SMASH it. And when November is over this blog will cleanly and naturally transition into a blog about my journey as a writer and artist and might one day even have some good stuff worth showing off on it. I couldn’t have planned it better at five in the morning when I was desperately trying to sleep!
Also my very best friend in the whole entire world is going to do NaNiWriMo with me which is fantastic because she’s a brilliant writer and the more of her writing that is in the world the better the world is, so I’m looking forward to that.
Anyway, so that’s what this little blog is aiming to do. As for who I am and all that, as I said, I’m Jamie, AKA Huffbuh. And the story behind that is my sister used to draw a comic series about me called “Jamie the Human Fish Boy” in which I would be going about my daily business before someone would greet me with “hey, Fish Boy” to which I’d respond “I’m not a fish.”
It was funnier than it sounds. She’s a fantastic artist.
From that I started calling myself Humanfishboy online. But once I became all grown up I was far too much of a MANLY MAN to use an internet handle identifying me as a “boy” so it became HFB which I soon started pronouncing phonetically. Hff-buh. Huffbuh. There you go. There’s the story. It is a precious story.
As for the rest of what I’m about, I’m a twenty-five year old autistic house-husband and ridiculously avid player of the videogame World of Warcraft. So expect me to talk about that game a little too much going forward. I have the best wife (well, technically fiancée but we’ll get that officially sorted within the next year or so) in the whole entire planet. And she, while also being a brilliant writer when she wants to be, is often much too busy being a brilliant scientist instead.
I am immensely proud of her and she is a constant inspiration. Expect me to talk about her a lot too. Because she’s the best.
That about wraps up introductions. I’m sure you’ll get a much better idea of what I’m all about over the next month – and BEYOND!!!
Now, I’ve got a lot of work to get done in anticipation for NaNoWriMo. See you tomorrow.
